Gli ambasciatori contribuiscono a far conoscere lo strumento dell'iniziativa dei cittadini europei, stimolare il dibattito e convincere i cittadini a impegnarsi in prima persona per una causa che sta loro a cuore. Svolgono le proprie attività su base volontaria.
Provengono da un'ampia gamma di organizzazioni attive a livello europeo, nazionale o regionale e hanno in comune un'esperienza nel campo della democrazia partecipativa e l'obiettivo di incoraggiare la partecipazione dei cittadini al processo decisionale.

Inoltre in ciascuno Stato membro sono stati creati punti di contatto nazionali ICE per fornire assistenza ai gruppi di organizzatori.
