On 2 March, the European Parliament will hold a public hearing on the 13th successful European citizens' initiative 'Ban on conversion practices in the European Union'.
On 10 February, the Commission partially registered a European Citizens' Initiative entitled ‘EU initiative to protect stray dogs, stray cats and animals in shelters in the EU/non-EU countries’.
The organisers call on the Commission to “strengthen the protection of stray dogs, stray cats and animals in shelters in the EU and to ensure that EU action in third countries does not contribute to animal suffering”.
Some aspects of the organisers’ objectives did not meet the admissibility criteria for registering a citizens’ initiative, therefore the registration was partial. See the Commission decision for more details.
The partial registration followed a two-stage procedure, in which organisers, in a first stage, were invited to amend their initial initiative, taking into account the first assessment of the Commission.
The organisers have six months to open the signature collection.
On 29 January, the European Commission registered a European citizens' initiative entitled ‘Stop Funding Russia’s War: Phase Out Harmful and Useless Russian Imports into the EU’.
The initiative invites the Commission to propose measures to end the EU’s remaining import dependencies on Russia and Belarus by introducing sectoral bans or decisive phase-outs.
The initiative organisers have six months to open the signature collection.
On 26 January 2026, the organisers of the European citizens' initiative ‘Stop Destroying Videogames’ submitted it to the European Commission for examination, after the verification phase was successfully completed.
The 14th successful initiative has gathered 1,294,188 verified statements of support from EU citizens, surpassing the required minimum of one million, and reached minimum numbers in 24 Member States.
The organisers of the initiative call on the Commission to introduce a requirement for publishers selling or licensing videogames in the EU to leave such games in a functional state, so as to prevent publishers from remotely disabling videogames.

O Comité Económico e Social Europeu (CESE) vai organizar um debate sobre o êxito da iniciativa de cidadania europeia «A minha voz, a minha escolha: por um aborto seguro e acessível» durante a sua reunião plenária de quarta-feira, dia 21 de janeiro de 2026. O debate está relacionado com a adoção do parecer do CESE sobre esta iniciativa.
O debate será transmitido pela Internet.
Em 5 de janeiro, a Comissão registou uma iniciativa de cidadania europeia intitulada «Ética, transparência e integridade para os partidos políticos europeus».
A iniciativa convida a Comissão a criar um modelo europeu de governação ética assente na transparência, na integridade e na responsabilidade partilhada. Os organizadores da iniciativa dispõem agora de seis meses para dar início à recolha de assinaturas.
Trata-se da primeira iniciativa registada em 2026 e da 125.ª desde 2012.
Em conformidade com o disposto no artigo 15.º do Regulamento ICE, os organizadores da iniciativa intitulada «Proibição das práticas de conversão na União Europeia», tiveram a oportunidade de descrever pormenorizadamente os objetivos da iniciativa. Com efeito, no dia 12 de dezembro de 2025, foram recebidos pela comissária responsável pela pasta da Igualdade, Hadja Lahbib, e por alguns funcionários da Comissão Europeia.
Em 3 de dezembro de 2025, a Comissão registou uma iniciativa de cidadania europeia intitulada «Fim à dualidade de critérios em matéria de direitos humanos».
Esta iniciativa insta a Comissão a estabelecer uma supervisão normalizada dos direitos humanos em todos os seus domínios de competência, no âmbito da ação externa europeia relativa aos países terceiros.

Em 2 de dezembro, o Parlamento Europeu organiza uma audição pública sobre a 12.ª iniciativa de cidadania europeia bem-sucedida: «My Voice, My Choice: pelo aborto seguro e acessível». Os organizadores foram convidados a apresentar os objetivos da iniciativa e terão a oportunidade de dialogar com deputados ao Parlamento Europeu. A Comissão Europeia será representada na audição pela comissária Hadja Lahbib, responsável pela Igualdade, Preparação para Crises e Gestão de Crises.
Em 16 de dezembro, os membros do Parlamento Europeu debaterão a iniciativa durante a sessão plenária, com a participação da Comissão Europeia.
Ambas as reuniões serão transmitidas pela Internet e gravadas.
